The present life of man, O king, seems to me, in comparison of that time which is unknown to us, like to the swift flight of a sparrow through the room wherein you sit at supper in winter, with your commanders and ministers, and a good fire in the midst, whilst the storms of rain and snow prevail abroad; the sparrow, I say, flying in at one door, and immediately out at another. Whilst he is within, he is safe from the wintry storm; but after a short space of fair weather, he immediately vanishes out of your sight, into the dark winter from which he had emerged. So this life of man appears for a short space, but of what went before, or what is to follow, we are utterly ignorant.

What went before was my parents life which I learnt a lot about. What will follow is my grandhildrens lives and they have already lived some adventures in my lifetime. One even became a parent four years ago.
Thinkers before our time were modern some remain modern but still are dead and gone.

Worrying about an impossibe life after death is cut short by the event itself.
Ah Maurice, who ever said worrying about "an impossible life after death"?
For one who believes in an 'afterlife', it isn't an impossibility but an expectation. Religions that have a reward-punishment aspect to an afterlife, the only worry is which one one would go to.

You'd be suprised how many people worry about being born. Those religions that believe in an afterlife of reincarnations would be concerned about their next life.
Any worries are about what will happen in the afterlife, not whether there is an afterlife.

Ah myksav, Hells bells, but I know all that.

    I did say I'm a voracious reader.
All those reincarnation concerns are pointless.

Just when I think it can't get any worse you produce this! I'm still shocked by the 9/11 comment you made 2 months ago!

That's why I included the word tragic. I knew the oversensitive might take my post badly.

You are far too sensitive and appear to enjoy being shocked.

    Remember I'm pre-political correctness.

Too sensitive perhaps. No enjoyment from being shocked - especially by the hardship of others.

BTW, I'm wholly against political correctness. I see it as the bed-fellow of Atheism. And I dislike it equally.

Maurice - it wasn't witty, it was cheap, combined bad taste with an ignorant stereotype.
And leave off the forced jollity of the exlamation mark! Ok!
    Very irritating.
