Eurovision 2007: Ireland left twirling like a Dervish

Brian Kennedy...even Chris Doran...even Donna and Joe...come back, all is forgiven
On the basis of tonight's entries on the Late Late Show, it will be Ireland Nils Points in Helsinki! Won't do better than bottom 5 in the final...

UPDATE: John Waters has just won it!!! And to say that was one of the better entries tonight tells how embarrassing all the songs were.

Truly frightening all round. Some dollops of gibberish written by assorted Scandinavians, X Factor losers and John Waters, all sung by that shrill harridan from Dervish, who have long languished in obscurity for good reason.

Er...well yeah! You've got it in one. Be very interesting to see what odds Paddy Power offers on this once he opens a book on the Eurovision.

I think John Waters winning heralds our arrival as a post-modern nation with a middle-aged, long-haired freak representing us. We'll get no points, of course. Just like Germany, Finland and Belgium got when they were at this stage a decade ago.

In fairness, Germany managed 8th with one such, er, postmodern entry, one year but only because feckin' Guildo Horn decided to take a tour around the stage rigging...

Let's not forget yer man from Austria and his cut out animals either...who actually did better than Micky Joe Harte and the lovely Sweet Charity girls

Ireland will never win a Eurovision until Celia Ahern starts ghost-writing songs. Just before the election.

Face it lads, anyone's better than those two gormless talentless inbreds from Athlone two years ago.
"Elite - a small superior group; esp one that has a power out of proportion to its size." (Oxford English Dictionary)

The majority cannot therefore be the elite.

It'll stand out in that its not pop or rock, but unlike the entries over the past few years, its uniquely Irish, and I think this alone could do it for Ireland. Irish music has always been liked by Europeans, and it will be recognised on the night by all countries, and hopefully liked, so I doubt we'll be in the last five, I think we'll be in the top 5, but you can't predict Eurovision anymore, so it all comes down to luck at the end of the day.

We'll be like the musical equivalent of Preston NE or Third Lanark or the Tipperary

We'll be like the eurovision equivalent of Nottingham forest, a once great power languishing in the third division. There's something appealing about it in a self-pitying way.

Lads its all a bit of craic at the end of the day, stop being so cynical, who thought that a dressed up rock group would've won it last year? Eurovision is completely unpredictable, we have a good song sung by a good group, give it a chance at least.
