    Does "coming together" mean merger?

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern TD, today called for a coming together of soccer associations, North and South, to help further develop and promote the game on the island. He said that this made compelling good sense. He believed it would be warmly welcomed by the great majority of sports fans who, above all, wanted to see an Irish soccer team achieve its full potential internationally. This was simply about the love of the game, and had no political implications.

FAI and the IFA have a lot of bad blood between them, it be very unlikely that they'll merge, not until we have a united Ireland.

agreed. A United Ireland team is impossible under current FIFA regulations. However closer relations are desirable for both, as evidenced by the tentative success of the Setanta Cup so far.

Ah sure I reckon it's motivated by them overtaking us in the FIFA rankings. Ahern should just sit tight coz we'll be back ahead of em soon
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

Fact is that any arrangement would involve the FAI backing itself into the IFA as the FAI was formed when the LeinsterFA left the IFA.

Personally, I think Micko Wallace is the man to sort them all out. When he finally decide to step back from the building business he would make a fantastic chief exec for the national football asssociation.
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

Strange thing is that there would probably still be one Irish national team had the southern splitters not got involved.

I'm not sure that one match against SAn Marino would be able to do that.
