Fishing scheme could cost state millions in compensation | The Post
.....O’Reilly’s office has informed officials in the Department of Agriculture that she intends to take the unusual step of laying a special report on the matter before the Oireachtas shortly......
It appears that under this scheme somefishermen were denied compensation when it appears they should have qualified!!
......Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins, who was involved in the original Ombudsman complaint, called on the Oireachtas Agriculture and Fisheries Committee to launch formal hearings into the scheme.
‘‘I have been involved with the Ombudsman’s office for nearly 20 years and I’ve never seen a scheme like this,’’ Higgins said. ‘‘It is very clear that fishing families were wrongly denied access to the scheme, and the state may now be liable for millions of euro in compensation at a time when we can least afford it."
The Department of Agriculture and the Ombudsman’s office declined to comment on the issue. Fahey did not return a call requesting.....
