Reillys show was repeated today. It was only the usual council crap, nothing inciteful or interesting!

Thought she spoke surprisingly well. Has the makings of a good mayor.

Its easy to speak well when you have a script in front of you. Remember she took part in no debates prior to the election, local or county. And before someone says she had 'pneumonia prior to the election', she was out canvassing the night the county debate was on between, Barbara, mary foley and John mulvihill. Now that I think of it, Beecher wasnt involved in any debates either. (note for future candidates - dont do pre election debates and top the poll!)
I notice that no mention was made of the pact between SF & FF. No doubt Reilly was under orders not to bring up anything controversial.

Reilly gave Donie Daly and Halllinan enough time on the FF/SF mayoral pact, all one sided of course. Daly makes me laugh saying that he thinks the top 5 should be mayor (meaning he would be up in 3 years time) and he was involved in trying to negotiate a pact with the shinners himself, he stated that on the east cork journal, then he tells reilly that he's not that interested in the mayor. It would be very unfair to pass off McLellan's illness proir to the election, one of her supporters called to my door but i do know she did try to get out and do abit herself.

In deed Pat Reilly gave me my say on the pact, in the course of a much longer discussion. As you say 'all one sided of course', so that makes it even stranger that given airtime, why wouldnt SF give their side of the story?
I'm glad that i make you laugh, Perky, the general consensus amongst people of the town is that the first 5 elected should get a chance of being Mayor, those being the 5 most voted for councillors, and it would mean that 4 out of the 5 political parties would have the chain over the course of the 5 years. If you can think of a fairer method, by all means tell us!
I discussed the possibility of a pact with Sinn Fein, the main reason, was to make sure that SF knew that there was an alternative to doing a deal with FF. It would have been too easy for SF to say, they had to deal with FF as there was no alternative arrangement on the table. This is the sorest point of all for SF supporters (current & former) to countenance - that there was actually an alternative to keeping FF in control of YTC, but SF decided to deal with FF of their own volition!
And again I will reiterate the Mayorship isnt the biggest problem with this pact its is the carving up of the various committees,to the exclusion of councillors that may have had more experience or better skillsets to better serve the town. The Mayorship is ideally suited to people that have 'served their time' on the council and have spent at least 3/4 years learning the ropes.

Sandra called to me personally while campaigning. By all accounts she did a fair bit of work in the lead in. She will be a popular mayor, I'm sure.

I'd agree with the concept of the "Top 5" as it were, getting a chance to wear the chain. In fact I think it's something that should be adapted for the future, to ensure a cohesive and fair approach.

What I don't agree with is the concept of "pacts". I can't see, as a layman and outsider, how every issue worthy of vote or opinion from the chamber can be broken down in such a manner. I think the whole idea is negative, invites accusations of party politicking and bias, and leads the public to lose faith in the ideal of "one councillor-one vote."

Look at the Fermoy situation (the gang of 5), and the ridicule that led to. No one was a winner.

My two cents, ymmv, opinions welcome etc.

Totally agree RM. Sandra is going to be a popular mayor. As you know i voted for Sandra as Mayor (she topped the poll and as such deserved it!), this is also her 2nd term on the council and is a county councillor into the bargain. Should have all the ingredients to be successful as Mayor.
Also agree with your opinion regarding the whole pact concept. The only problem is, all 9 councillors have to be of that mindset and if there is a power at all cost mentality among certain groups it aint gonna work! The idea of equity and fairness just isnt in the vocabulary of some people.
