Irish broadcaster states "we" are in top 5 of Eurovision

Graham Norton has stated in his coverage of the Euro vision song conest that

"We are" in the top 5. [of the UK].

And talking about Ireland he stated that he had hoped "they" do well.

He is from the 26 counties-Cork I believe.

He's from Bandon of which it is said that 'even the pigs are protestant'.

He also described Ronan Keating (who wrote the Danish entry) as 'one of OUR songwriters'. Which 'we' did he mean. I'm pretty sure he meant British.

Norton was useless: unfunny and annoying throughout also incredibly btchy about the Russian hosts. The programme is bristling with politics as we all know. (His relentless sarcasm about Russia wouldn't have anything to do with the Russia - US/UK stand off over plans to point a load of missiles at them in Eastern Europe and about which the Russians are not happy. US/UK have basically ripped up the nuclear non proliferation treaty.) We don't want those Ruskies getting any free or good publicity, do we? Norton made a point of referring to heavy handed policing having somewhat marred the event. Jesus! Where has he been!!! The UK police have been behaving like vicious thugs in recent times, arresting tourists for taking photographs of famous landmarks, killing innocent citizens by attacking them from behind and many other examples that can be pointed to.

He has a contract with the BBC which requires him to make his commentary in a way that reflects the UK audience the BBC serves.

    It is a non-story.

No it probably had more to do with the heavy handed squashing of gay rights protesters in Moscow.

Graham Norton Terry Wogan and Craig Doyle seem to do it too natrally.

For the people from the six counties they have a different argument because of the GFA under which the six counties are (for the time being) part of the "UK". However the people from the 26 counties do not do this. Could you imagine an australian or American doing that ?

This story still doesn't belong in the Cork forum.

and please stop referring disparagingly to my country as the 26 counties - I live in the same country as you - Ireland.

blacbloc, you sound like a permanently bitter individual, always on the look-out for opportunities to be offended. If Britain did not exist, on whom would you vent your spleen?

if an american or australian, or anyone else was contracted by RTE / BBC / CNN/ whomever to present for their domestic audience such an event i would fully expect them to refer to their target audience as "us" and everyone else as "them", its called professionalism......

i think because of our somewhat complicated history with the UK that some people look for these types of things to get hot and bothered about....
