    Yep, no-one wins from this scenario and seeds of bitterness have been sown which will take a long time to fade, if ever. This has indeed damaged Cork GAA terribly. The question of course is how much. The theory as to whether of course the Footballers will also now jump in to support the Hurlers is flying around but personally I'd think they'll play away as normal - but you never know

    I think it was Seanie McGrath who spoke on Drivetime ... he's currently engaged in training the 08 Panel in their absence from the Cork Hurling Squad.

    It is all very sad really with people siding with both camps. The players apparently refused to meet Teddy McCarthy as a Selector (he's one of the great Cork Players in my opinion) and I think John Allen (recent Manager when they won the All Ireland in the 2000s) has fallen on the side of the 08 Panel somewhat
    ARA I know!! Hope springs eternal for another great september!!!

    You know the joke?
    Sooner get beaten by London than Kilkenny!!!

    Did text in to Des wondering whether George Mitchell would delay the middle east to sort out Cork hurling first?

    Now there's an idea! Obama to sort out the Cork debacle ... his desk isn't overflowing yet hopefully ... and it is a crisis, it's our Middle East one!

    Further news just breaking on this situation;

    The 2008 Cork hurlers have released a statement today outlining their intent to hold a press conference in the near future.

    The statement reads: 'Due to the length and complexities of the statements issued by Gerald McCarthy and the Cork County Board on Tuesday and the gravity of the situation, the Cork Senior Hurling panel of 2008 has decided to hold a press conference to deal, in detail, with all of the issues involved in the coming days.'

    Details of arrangements will follow when confirmed.

    It would seem if and when this Press Conference occurs;

    1. That no holds will be barred and hard hitting comments will occur outlining the players version of events. But they were obliged to make comments following those of the County Board and the Manager.

    2. As to whether any chance of resolution following the Press Conference gleamed from comments during the Conference will be possible is debatable. Though I doubt it and it is likely only to subsequently entrench both sides further.

    The exploits of the Cork Hurlers usually enrich the lives of Cork people for a little and brings some enjoyment during the Championship each year, which would be all the more to be welcomed in the present circumstances and the state of affairs in this country. Fat chance of that now I suspect and possibly for many years to come either.

    I feel sorry for Gerald Mac- may not be a great coach/manager but he is a legend of Cork hurling.
    I hate to see Gerald Mac against the players while the vindictive pr*** that is using Gerald as a patsy and engineered all this to pay back old scores keeps quiet on the sidelines.

    He has presided over the decline of hurling in Cork especially in the City where inability to adapt and interest kids in the game has meant a huge outflow to rugby and soccer, both of which are thriving at underage level due to fantastic community involvement and top class coaching.
    City clubs like the Barrs, Rockies, etc which used to produce three or four inter county standard hurlers are struggling to reach even the q final of the club shc.

    I've got zero sympathy for the Cork players here. Its not, nor should it be up to them to decide who the manager is. Let the inflated egos sit out the season, and good luck to the young lads who step who actually want to play for their county without ridiculous preconditions.

    Firstly I Don,t come from Cork.
    The behaviour of the Cork Hurlers remind me of the fall of the Roman Empire.
    While the enemy were at the gates. The generals instead of defending the Citadel were inside feasting themselves and arguing about who should be the generals.
    They have become fattened by their own importance and consider beneath themselves to get their hands dirty.
    By wearing the Cork jersey , the players have an invisible bonus that I suppose 28 other counties would give their left hand for , and that is the REAL chance of winning an All Ireland medal , to all other counties this would be beyond value. Remember the song, "Too many chiefs and not enough Indians" my advice is Bin THE Bigheads.

    Couple of things - the ringleaders are yesterdays men. The wouldn't win another AI regardless who is in charge. All still capable of the odd big game, but thats a world away from the consistency that was their hallmark about 4 years ago.

    County Board structure and personnel is clearly in dire need of an overhaul, but Donal Og and co are not the ones to do it. If this was settled and they retired gracefully (which they won't) the clubs would move to change the set up.

    Players attitude to Gerald McCarthy is disgraceful. The clubs ratified his appointment by about 88-6 or something. The man is absolutely entitled to go about his job as appointed. Players have no place in selecting team managers.

    The Cork fans who are backing the players and referring to the young lads who have grasped their chance to live their dream and don the Cork jersey and represent their county, as scabs, are beneath contempt. For a county that prides itself on its sporting tradition any hurling fan worth his salt should support whoever is wearing a Cork jersey.

    Finally, for a county with nearly half a million people - more than Waterford, Tipp, and Limerick put together, the refusal of 50 of its best players to turn out should not be a serious problem.

    The city clubs will continue to lose ground - same in the other cities - the likes of Castlegar and Mellowes in Galway, South Liberties in Limerick - have all gone off the radar in the past quarter of a century too. The old days are never coming back for them.
