Cobh Town Council - elections 2009

Two years out at this stage what are your thoughts - who will be the winners and losers ? Who is running, who is performing, who is not etc.

Two years to go and the jockeying for positions have begun. It seems the natives want to see a change in some of the line up. Much surprise was expressed the last time out how some of those who polled near the top in first prefferences were not appointed to any committees while some of those who failed to make a quota ended up in a pact sharing the position of Mayor, but thats democracy, theres no doubt about it but there will be an interesting line up in 2009

Just looked at the figures for 2004.. that must be FF's worst result in the state.. and FG managing 2 seats to FF's one, on barely a quota, great result for them
1,197 people agree with me.. how many agree with you ?

There was a lot of infighting between two sitting FF councillors at the time and it blew up in there faces, a lot of damage has been repaired since then and they should have three seats on a good day two seats on a bad day. The word is they are grooming a very smart line up of candidates. This far out from the finish post the certainties look like,

    O Connor (Ind.)
    McCarthy (SF)
    Whitty (FG)
    Histon (Ind.)
    Mulvihill (Lab.)
Possibly Crowley(Lab.) but he has annoyed the chamber of commerce recently when be became very sensitive of their critisism of the town council. So there is four seat up for grabs.

The very popular Noirin Doyle has indicated that she wont run again

Would you really? Well Histon is getting on a bit now, must be well into his 70s but still very active. O'Connor around a long time too. Whitty is the current Mayor and should be safe along with Stella Meade (if they both run again). What about John Mulvihill Jr ? If he stands, as I suspect, he should be safe, but not necessarily a poll-topper. Kieran McCarthy should be safe as he will get the left vote and the only one that stands up to the well entrenched establishment, doubt if he could bring in a running-mate though. Don't think Sarah Iremonger will make it after the recent u-turn, but the incinerator could still be a big issue.

What about Fianna Fáil ? Keating should be safe, can they bring in another?

Thanks for that. I agree with all of that but I wouldnt bet on Stella, she just managed to stumble across the line at the last no. of elections I think her mistake was to accept the second Mayoral position ,unfortunately by 2009 her term will be forgotten about. J.M.(jnr) was being cuter demanding the Mayoralty for the final year believing that having a high profile going into the election can only be an advantage however if there is any controversy it can work against him. I think FF will come back a lot stronger.

Possibly, depends on the candidates. Jim Halligan just missed out last time but doubt he'd go again. Unless they can get someone like Sonia O'Sullivan or Stephen Ireland to stand!
