    €95,000 for the Lord Mayor

    Hi All,

What is a reasonable salary for the Lord Mayor of Cork? Or any city come to think of it!

As the recently elected Mayor of Fingal, I am aware of the huge workload and responsibility that I will undertake over the next few months.

In Cork, like in Fingal its a full time job but its 3 1/2 times the representational of a Councillor. In Fingal, the representational is approximately €45,000.

How can it be justified in any city?

If the mayor had a managerial or executive function, it could be justified, but with the current role, it is hard.

I suppose the best you could do is say that it involves taking a year off work, so you have to cover lost salary and also provide some compensation for the fact it could have negative career implications.

I'm not a labour supporter but I knew the outgoing mayor in Cork - Ml Ahern fairly well. I think he performed an excellent job over the last twelve months and was a very good example of how a full time mayor works espically within the constrainst of the current legislation. It is also worth noting that he would have been earning something not too dissimilar if he had remained full time lecturing for the year so in that sense he was earning aprox. what he would have been earning otherwise.

What does it matter to you in your role as Mayor of Fingal what any other mayor or in the case of the Lord Mayor of Cork get's paid?
Surely you have far better things to be worried about?

For a start some lessons in English and proper sentence construction might be in order? The word representational is used twice in the same sentence... at least once in the wrong context- I'm being generous at that.

Use simple words... what you wanted to say I guess was - In Cork, like in Fingal, it is a full time job. However the population being represented in Fingal is three and a half times greater while the salary lags behind by some fifty thousand euro.
Sorry for being a bit harsh but hopefully you'll take it as it is meant, some constructive criticism. You can’t expect to win an argument especially in a hostile environment like this unless you put your side across in the best manner possible.

You should be willing to pay for the honour, rather than expecting to get paid for it? Think of all the free publicity, raised profile etc.. It's a pity that your term in office isn't (probably) nearer the next general election.

There are too many politicians with their snouts in the public purse, with each layer more overpaid that the last. All willing to vote themselves generous tax-free expenses/allowances. The taxpayer is being ripped off.

What has been the benefit to Dubliners of creating Fingal & Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown? It's obvious where the benefits lie for the politicos, but it looks like a waste of money to me.

I'm in DLRCoCo area where the council has built itself a Taj Mahal Town Hall at huge expense, but all we plebs seem to have got is increased bin charges, extended parking meters out into suburban streets and a threat of clamping.

    Well said Mollox.

And all Swords got was a massive building in the middle of the village, where there was once a park, and a woeful 9-5 traffic / parking problem. Which is why I avoid Swords at all possible costs.

I often find it odd that the Fingal Planning Dept. is based in the worst planned building in North Dublin.

All expenses are tax free for everyone... it's pretty much the whole point of a expenses, to compensate someone for money they have spent in the course of performing their duties.
There are much better things to go after if you want to hammer politicians for the service the provide than that... move on

It's the unvouched expenses which seem to be unique to politicians. Also, the very generous allowances.
I have to attach receipts for everything over €10 (and anything under €10 where a receipt is normally issued). No receipt, no expenses.
