Cork named in top 10 European destination by Yahoo!

Surprised there's no thread on this (if in fact there is please merge).
Cork has been named as one of the top 10 European travel destinations along with cities such as St Petersburg and Lyon in a poll conducted by Yahoo. This is just two years after Cork was named among the top 10 "Lonely Planet" destinations worldwide.

Personally I, being a resident of the city would never have thought of it as a great tourist destination but then I've never experienced Cork as a tourist. There seems to be a greater deviation from the old Paris/London/Venice/New York in a lot of these surveys which I find quite interesting. IMO while Cork is well serviced for touristy things to do it lacks something of the nature of an aquarium for a city of such maritime history or even a science museum - things like that always pull in great touristy business.

God, Cork people are unbearable about their city as it is. The rest of us don't need *this*.

That said, I suppose it is a nice city............

It could do with some paint. Particularly on the waterfront.

Only in the Top 10? Why isn't it in the Top 1? Yahoo must be punished...

There's a reason for that. We want to keep people AWAY from the Lee.

    No surprise there.

Cork has a fairly nice city centre in comparison to a lot of other cities, and all the tourist spots aren't that sprawled out which probably helps. The friendly nature of us cork folk helps a lot no doubt.

Now if we could get the bouncers down here to get down off their power trips we'll be doing fine.

Shouldn't that be "God and Cork people are unbearable about their city as it is"?

Strange enough decision though, but West Cork should be one of the top 3 European holiday destinations.
