Can anyone tell me what the state of play is with Cork's Kinsale Road Dump?

I tried doing a few internet searches and came up with the fact that the dump is closed and suggestions that it may be turned into a park but nothing concrete (excuse the pun).

I tried the CorkCity.ie website and the Dev Plan won't download for me.

This is probably old news in Cork but I wasn't around for it so I am trying to catch up.

Does anyone know what the plan is, what the timeframe is? and perhaps critically, what the likelihood of completion is given the change in economic circumstance.

According to the Council and this councillor's blog Cllr. Kieran McCarthy » Blog Archive » Kinsale Road Landfill it looks as if they are capping the ground (whatever that means) and hope to finish this work in October. That's all I can find as well. Will be interesting if they actually go ahead with the park - I doubt it myself. Maybe they can plonk Diarmuid Gavin's hanging basket there.

Capping the ground simply means placing clay and topsoil over the levelled off areas of the landfill. They'd also be finishing off any work required for venting/collection of methane gas if that isn't already fully completed.

I saw that the capping work had been done. Actually that was a 2.x million contract. Nice work if you can get it. However, there was no mention of what would be next. If the bloody Dev plan would download I could take a look. I would assume that the aspiration for it would be outlined.

It's an obvious choice and would be a huge amenity. Cost a lot of money though.

Thing is, Cork is over loaded with empty shop premisses and empty houses (anyone drive through Ballincollig ??). So that won't work. A park, there in that spot, seems completely...random to me.

Can't download development plan either. Came across this though: http://www.corkcity.ie/newdevelopmen...al Version.pdf

Looks like the aspiration remains that it will proceed. Two mentions of Kinsale Road park:

    Parks Projects
Amenity Park at Kinsale Road Landfill
The design for this future City Park is at its very early stages. Given the transboundary nature of this future park, as well as its location, scale and role, the ambition is to hold extensive consultation to secure a design that matches the potential of the site.

    Kinsale Road Landfill Site
The Kinsale Road Landfill Site ceased the landfilling
of waste in July 2009. Capping of the site and
development of the site into a public park and
    various amenities is now underway.

Happy days. Thanks for that. Seems to be what I had heard/dreamed alright.

Though I suspect I'll be there as a member of the senior citizenry at the opening. If the capping cost a couple of million, I would imagine that the next stages would be considerably more and we ain't got no money no more.

Still it's a decent aspirational project. As for location, I think it would work fine as a destination. People will travel if the amenity is worthwhile. Besides, I would rather that tourists got an eyeful of greenbelt rather than rotting rubbish on their way in from the airport.

I think the plan was to make it like the Phoenix Park. Can't see that happening now. Should end up as just one big green field which is better than the dump anyway.

The following was included in a council Environment committee meeting agenda.
It refers to the various contracts in place. Number 9 refers to plans for an arena that could accommodate circuses and small outdoor concerts.

    Kinsale Road Landfill Site.

    Contract 8
Access Road, Playing Pitch, Capping and Ancillary works complete.

    Contract 9
Responses by Cork City Council Departments regarding Part 8(Article 81 of the 2001 Planning Regulations) process in regard to the provision of an all-weather arena suitable for hosting indoor and outdoor events and ancillary services are being considered.

    Contract 10
This contract commenced in June 2010. The successful contractor is Wills Bros Ltd., Dooradoyle, Limerick. This contract enables the provision of a Specified Engineering Cap over 90,000 m2 of the areas recently landfilled in the active part of the site. Approximately 60% of the works are now complete. Estimated Project Completion date is September/October 2011.

Master Plan for former Kinsale Road Landfill Site
Members were advised by the Senior Engineer Environment that investigations into potential recreational uses of the site were on going and that a draft Master Plan would be available towards the end of the year.
