    Old habits die hard

Cork East is a very rural constituency. Urbanisation is coming on fast, but the mindset of the people is still based in the past, at least when it comes to elections. Fianna Fail are going to expect to get in because they expect people to vote for the local Fianna Fail cndidate just because they ARE a Fianna Fail candidate. Each town's candidate will expect to get the votes from their townspeople, whether or not this will be enough to get them elected. Sinn Fein are using the same election tactics as they use in the Northern elections; that they are Sinn Fein, they stand for a United Ireland and if that's not a good enough reason for you then you must be a Unionist.

I don't know how it could be achieved, but it really is time for people in this constituency to wake up and think for themselves. Don't vote for David Stanton just because he's from Midleton, your home town. Don't vote for Michael Ahern just because your great-grandfather was against the Treaty. Don't vote for Sandra McLellan just because you were impressed at the way Sinn Fein negotiated the St. Andrew's Agreement and are about to re-enter Stormont. Don't vote for Sean Sherlock just because he's young and you're young. For God's sake, think for yourself. Geography doesn't matter, history doesn't matter, age doesn't matter. This is about ideas, plans, promises.

Having said that, Ned O'Keeffe has none of the above...
"During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."

Clever. The name's nothing to do with the Taoiseach, as it happens.

The geography is important, but it shouldn't be. Mallow has no TD either, and it's completely ignored, especially when it comes to employment. But look at the areas that have a TD. Have they helped them? No. So get rid of them.

Having said that, I would like a Mallow candidate to get in.

He does. And so does Bradford, effectively.

    /me shudders.

Geographically speaking, location has its part to play. The incumbents have done NOTHING for the Southern half of the constituency, the two that live there included.

Unfortunately, It's Hobson's choice, Jack Lynch.

With the number of candidates, and leaving Party politics aside, what options are there in this constituency?

    Bradford? What's he done lately?

Iremonger? Unsucessful in the Town Council elections...

McLellan? No experience, and not enough of a profile outside Youghal.

    Mulvihill? Hmmmm...

    That leaves Christy.

Oh I will be. I won't be adding preferences however, as I feel that none of the others will remember the voters of South and East Cork. (Those that stand a chance of election, that is.)
