What age is McLaughlin?
If Comiskey wanted to run next time, he would've run in the Locals
Perry would like Henry as a running mate, she'd be no threat

If Fine Gael go with Perry and McLoughlin then I think Sinn Fein will run Michael Colreavy who would be the only Leitrim candidate. This would give SF an outside chance at taking the last seat.
Freedom is fragile and must be protected. To sacrifice it, even as a temporary measure, is to betray it.
He'd be in his late 50's I'd say. Himself and Bree were first elected in 1974.
Re Comiskey, he didn't have much in the way of options. In Manor his area already had a sitting FG cllr in Frank Dolan, likewise Dromahair had McTernan in situ. So he may have looked across to Drumcliffe, but with Leonard losing out at convention, and therefore being added on afterwards, there was no hope of being added on to the ticket there.
That was FG's biggest problem last time - Henry was an also-ran running in the town, Comiskey and Perry both took plenty of votes out of the town and surrounding areas. McLoughlin would have swept up many more votes, and with Comiskey then being eliminated, he may well have taken the first FG seat, with a weakened Devins and an even more weakened Perry then fighting for the last seat.
FG can go for three candidates this time, and it could work out for them. With the FF vote being reduced somewhat, Scanlon may well come away with a decent FPV, but this speculated 'white knight' might cause him serious difficulty. FG would then have Perry, McLoughlin and probably Enda McGloin would look for the Leitrim nomination, and could well get it (Drumshanbo and its surrounds now in the constituency).
Bree would poll well around the town, but would be unlikely to make a strong challenge. SF are stagnant and Labour not at the races, Cawley would probably go but I'm afraid waving nonsense standard opposition-speak letters a la Chamberlain from your beloved leader won't wash this time. Noone else worth contemplating, though perhaps if it's an early election maybe the cancer care group might grow a collective pair and stand in it, rather than being hypocrites and Labour's lapdogs.
Tony McLoughlin is nephew of the late Joe McLoughlin who lived in and represented the Nth Leitrim "part" of then Sligo/Leitrim for many years and was very popular. He has lost out "for the good of the party " in 1997 and I think he will go all out this time. He was in pole position in '97 when Nealon retired for the Sligo town seat but Bruton and Spring came to a pact on certain seats in order to so called maximise each party's total. Spring wanted to give Bree a relatively free run in Sligo town and he knew McLoughlin would have won hands down. I understand there was a very acrimonious meeting between McLoughlin and Bruton but he ultimately dropped out. Bree still lost the seat.
Recently his wife wasn't well and there was rumours that we was going to drop out altogether but I'm glad all seems to be well again. There will a lot of pressure from Mna na hEireann for Henry to run and FF will be delighted if she does. It is also very possible that McManus will not run again which would leave the way clear for a person of McLoughlin's standing both in Sligo town and in Nth Leitrim
FG had chosen him and Leonard in 1997 originally if I'm not mistaken, but then dropped McLoughlin in favour of Perry. In fairness it was leaving the south of the county completely open for FF if they hadn't, but still it was harsh on McLoughlin. Henry has tried and failed, and it would be a waste of a nomination and indeed maybe a seat if they chose her over him. I doubt MacManus would go again, he isn't likely to win so he stands to gain little by doing so. SF's options are limited beyond him though.
there is absolutely no way in the world that fine gael could even consider running imelda henry as opposed to mc loughlin
the facts are simple once again mc loughlin got a full 2 quaotas in first preference votes as opposed to henrys 60% of one.
she wasnt even the first female in the race with healy mc gowan taking 200 more first preference votes which may i had considering both she and mc loughlin are from the one parish it would be fair to assume that many of these votes would in fact have transferred directly to mc loughlin.
henry didnt even transfer that well from mc loughlin. mc loughlin nearly polled as many votes in sligo strandhill in the local as henry did first preference in the genereal election last time out! it is ludicrous to even suggest that henry should even be considered for nomination.
What will be interesting is who will tony co-opt to his council seat if and when he is elected??
