    Galway City Council Pact

LAB / FG / GREEN Mayoral Pact on Galway City Council is to end after Labour Cllrs supported the FF nominee for Chairperson of HSE West Health Forum. Cllr John Mulholland broke the news on the Galway Bay FM K.F. show this morning. What new arrangement will be put together ? FF/ FG/ PD perhaps. FG/ PD/ Green & Crowe ? or FF/ LAB/ PD. Whatever new arrangement will have to present a more united image and be more positive about the city.

If true, it's a sad day for Galway. Whatever the problems the FG/lab/Grn alliance had, it was nothing compared to the criminal neglect and incompetence that governed city council from '99-'04.
I'm not going to attack Labour because, if this news is true, the voters will punish them in subsequent elections like they did in '97.

As for the next Mayor, Cllr. O'Brolchain is well respected in the City Council and I'm confident that he can get the support next June.

Anyone want to hazard Rabbitte and Kennys response to this?

We're not going to support a FF candidate for the mayoralty, or Crowe.

This seems a suspiciously minor affair for a pact to be broken over. There must surely be more to it - something happening in the background or something.

Mulholland some weeks ago said it was all over.

Any party hacks have any updates and what will happen come June??

Any alliance would involve FG-could Walsh have a second year as Mayor, it would really mess up NOB's election plans if he didn't have a year as Mayor.

Latest is the pact is still there, and that's coming from a party hack. I won't go into too much detail, but assurances have been given. I suspect Labour and FG, if not fully in favour if it themselves, are under severe pressure from Head Office to maintain it.

Lab and FF had no choice but to form an agreement for the Chairmanship of the HSE forum.... between them they had a majority of two. The other option would have had to include Lab/FG/PD/Greens & Independents. Which option was the practical one and the most workable????

The Labour Councillors were Catherine Connolly (Galway City), Colm Keavney (Co. Galway), Declan Bree (Co. Sligo) & Kieran Walsh (Limerick City)

Its been a dismal council 'pact' so far. Galway needs a change badly. Labour have been completly out of their depth here.
