    Connaught-Ulster 2009

I know its called north west and we'll also have longford and westmeath but with the addition of 2 new counties and clare having joined for 2004, how do we see 2009 going.

Is it basically a FF/FG fight with the also-ran's.

Either Harkin holds on for 1-1-1 or FF pinch her seat for 2-1.
    That's if it was now.

But there's over a year to go, things might be different then, you never know.

Its is a four province constituency, so it should be Connaught Ulster, Munster and Lenister 2009, or Ireland North and West(ish) 2009.

1 FF, O Neachtain if he goes will get in easily enough especially if the talk about a Donegal sitting Senator running to mop up the northern half for him,

Harkin will struggle the independents that were her core support base in 2004 have disappeared, and she must be worried that she just doesnt have the capacity to run the same campaign, if she didnt get elected it would be a shame because she is the hardest working of the three current ones by a mile,

Higgins/Ring whichever gets the FG nomination will probably do ok too, but it depends on who Sinn Fein go with,

I hope Labour have a better showing and put up a credible candidate, now with Westmeath in their they should get a good vote combined with galway good chance to boost party profile in the area because we all know it needs it,

So I see the Harkin Seat being up for grabs and it being a scrap between her and and Sinn Fein for the seat,

I think SF's day has come and gone, Doherty will concentrate on going after the Dail seat.

hopefully it has, it would be a backward step for the region if they didnt re-elect harkin in favour of SF, it would mean moving from a "liberal" seat to communist one in the Parliament and mean that the representation would be limited with the system on reports and jobs handed out in the parliament as the Communists dont get many of them, not important ones anyways.

    who gives a ************************?

I think the word "liberal" would also be quite scary for most of Harkin's supporters

Its not that I wont vote for SF I would put them above FG and and possibly FF,

The fact is at European level for those that dont know, the parliament follows the d'hondt system, wherby reports, committee chairs, etc are divided up on the size of you group, e.g. the EPP-ED is the largest so will nearly always choose the most prestigious reports, committee chairs etc, after they choose the socialists and then the liberals.

Thus the point I am making is that to replace a Liberal MEP (which Marian Harkin is member) with a Communist MEP (the Group which Sinn Fein sit in at European Level) would devalue the seat to a certain extent as it would remove a MEP from the third largest group to an MEP from a smaller group. It is also better to have a spread of representation in political groups as we will have only 12 MEPs after the Lisbon Treaty it would be better to have one in as many groups as possible because at the end of the day they will be protecting Irish interests and will ask their groups to amend and argue for Ireland case in reports etc.

So voting Sinn fein would a backward step if you are voting for them over harkin, It would better in my opinion to vote Sf in rather than FG as FG have enough reps in the EPP-ED to take care of Irish interests.

I think he was referring to their group in the EP.

Personally I'd love to see a Green elected, but I don't fancy their chances.
