Something practical the Govt. CAN do for Shannon

Forget all the " Tadhg a dhá thaobh " stuff being spouted by that muppet O'Dea and others. To increase the accessibility and attraction of the airport, the government should set about building a rail connection , with a spur from the Limerick - Ennis line. No pun intended, but this should be fast- tracked. In the long term, an extension of the Ennis line to Galway and Sligo could be undertaken, but the spur to Shannon could be done relatively quickly.

There’s already been a thread on the pointlessness of the Western Rail Corridor here. In summary, there’s no gain from reinstating an infrequent rail service that will be slower than road. If you really can’t think of a better use for several hundred million, then lets just not spend it at all. I think we have to resist the urge to find ‘something’ for Government to do.

There’s a scene in "Electra Glide in Blue", where a truck driver is pleading with the motorcycle cop not to give him a ticket as it will cost him his job. He explains he’s only six weeks back from serving as a Marine in Vietnam and that he’s finding it hard to hold down a job – this being his third since he returned.

The cop says “You were a Marine in Vietnam? I was a Marine in Vietnam.” The truck driver looks up hopefully. “You’re only back six weeks?” continues the cop. “Well I’m going to do for you what it took people six months to do for me. Absolutely nothing.” He writes the ticket.

The Mid West still has a fine airport and services to the UK, Europe and US. That’s more than the South East has. If the Mid West cannot turn what it has into something, it deserves to lose it. Its time for them to find their own strengths.
However, banks know they have a duty of care to their clients and I'm sure that this should prevent them lending irresponsibly.

Schubert reminds me of the fools who said that Knock Airport would be "white elephant on a foggy boggy hillside."

Or Éamonn an dá Thuív as Foinse called him during the Nice election.

That's right - if you can't get the ball, get the man.

A rail link would be a good thing and not just for airport traffic. Tourists complain regularly about the inconvenience of biking around ireland and trains would help fill in the gaps.

Ennis could possibly use a third level institution too - nothing to do with the airport directly but we know how systems work - organic growth around centres.

I think it could be a good idea to bring back the west clare railway as well. I know it was only ever single track, but it was rather a shame to close. Since most of the west of the county gravitates towards ennis, then a rail link would enormously improve the accesibility of the town. Perhaps there should be a direct rail link to shannon as well, from both Ennis and Limerick.

About 3 miles of it are under reconstruction between Moyasta and Kilkee. It would indeed be not only a means of access to West Clare but a tourist draw - the views around it are lovely.
