    Galway City Council

Anyone from Galway/knows about Galway City council care to comment on the child like behaviour of the City Council? Last week they picked on FG cllr Padraic Conneely, suggesting he should be "fired from a canon" he than retorted by sugesting SF Danny Callanan is on the army council. Two weeks ago the mayor held a vote when a FG cllr had gone to the toilet so he couldn't vote. There's many other stories, certainly enough to turn all of us off politics for a while.
I blame it on the diverse make up of the council. That wouldn't be a problem in most councils, but this is the first time we have had only 2 FF seats [they're bitter] That Labour are the biggest party [they're c**ky] we've had a SF or Green councillor. And of course the colourfull/controversal Padraic Conneely is there to stir things up. Not to mention the high number of Cllrs concentrating on becoming a TD. [I can think of at least 6 out of 15] Opinions anyone?

Really? This qualifies as slander? Which part especially? Maybe I can edit it out? [Not that it will make much of a difference, this thread is going the way of the Titanic!]

    Danny, interesting.

Padraic Connelly is proving to be a loose cannon. He is the luckiest person to have made it onto any council (he is only there by virtue of a tied elimination ( where on the tie break rule he had more first preferences) and then a strange FF transfer which favoured him strongly over SF. I hope he isn't one of the 6 expecting to become a TD.

That said I dont think his comment was meant to imply Callanan was on the army council -- it was a joke and what he said was that 'he (connelly ) wasn;t on the army council when Callanan joked about him being on too many committees

I agree calling a vote when someone leaves is very childish. I am surprised a labour mayor let that happen.

    Danny please keep us posted..

To be honest, if there is a vote, or due to be a vote or indeed in the middle of an important debate, don't go to the toilet. I would have thought that obvious. If a call of nature came and I was a councillor, i would not be moving until that debate was over and the next item reached. What if someone proposed some crazy amendment and it was taken. YOu cannot wait during a debate until people are back and sitting down, thats ridiculous, if they have disenfranchised themselves, that is their and unfortunately their constitutents problem.

When I read about the "Army Council" comment in the Galway Advertiser around the time I burst into laughter. It was a great line. V funny.

Yes, Cllr. O'Brolchain will be running in 2007-and run he will! And win he will! Oh the piss up the NUIG Young Greens will have the night he's elected! Everyones invited!
GalwayGirl, I'm going to defend Connelly in this occasion. City Councillors should be allowed to question city officials. It's bad enough that the people who run the city arent elected, but now they throw a hissy fit when they're questioned? Prehaps he could be more diplomatic about it, but his aims and ideas are right.

Of course the officals should be questioned and made to do their job, but connelly hasn't a clue. What is it they say all politicans are meerly failed actors, he is the ultimate example. He is the greatest publicity whore of all time. He is simply motivated by status and publicity clearly he isn't too concerned about earning respect. Did you hear him on the finnegan show he can't even speak properly, words missing in sentences etc. For me he is an example of all that is wrong in politics. He is such a wally he probably believes he is the next Taoiseach.

Danny, should officals be questioned-goes without saying, point doesn't have to be raised but connelly is a waster and i say that not being anti any particular party. The other 2 fg cllrs seem grand but that guy...........is it possible to be recalled or impeached?
