Sinn Fein to top poll in Roscommon

Sinn Féin to top poll in Roscommon - South Leitrim with 35% of the vote.

Naughten gone on 1% of the vote.

Boys and girls, this is why people should not take polls seriously.

We're obviously much closer to 25%

They're already referring to Martin Kenny as Deputy Kenny!

Hmmm.... Granted there's probably a health warning attached to this poll, but it's bad news for the Blueshirts if one of their more high profile figures can only muster 1%.

It was a 'survey' and not a poll and I bet that it was conducted in just the South Leitrim part of the constituency (I think about 15% of the constituency) where the SF candidate happens to come from along with Ellis. Naughton, who is South Roscommon based, would not be expected to poll well in South Leitrim.

You should change your thread title to "Sinn Fein top survey in South Leitrim" as the existing title is misleading.

They must've polled outside Kenny's house.

I'm no expert on the geography of the constituency, but a look at the 2004 results shows SF polling about 12% on average in the wards in Roscommon and Leitrim in which they ran (not all wards) - so its fairly hard to picture this poll being even vaguely accurate.

Does beg the question - either this paper has incredibly incompetent political journalist(s), or is pushing a particular agenda. Anyone know anything about the source of funding for the paper?

    Interesting,...

Now, if I can just get the Nationalist to conduct a poll in Oliver Plunkett Park and Spafield in Cashel .. I could win a seat too

There was a decent discussion about Leitrim in the past on the thread below. The South Leitrim area accounts for 26.5% of the electorate in the constituency, effectively a quota given the historical tendency of Leitrim people to back Leitrim candidates regardless of party allegiance.

"Deputy Kenny tops the survey poll with 35 per cent first preferences, John Ellis is on 31 per cent, Deputy Finneran on 20 per cent, and Senator Feighan on 12 per cent."
Hmmm, looking at these figures, which are drawn from the new Leitrim Post newspaper, I can conclude: (a) this would seem to be a Leitrim-only poll, (b) if so, it's bad news for Ellis and not Naughten (who would be expected to poll <1% here anyway in an effective FG camapign strategy) as not alone is Kenny outpolling him but his running mate Finneran is also taking a chunk of his 'local vote', (c) Feighan not making much impact for FG in Leitrim and Fg may need to add Gerry Reynolds to the ticket.

Then again, as with most constituency polls, we could just take it with a pinch of salt
