#vinb Thur 26/7/2012: NTMA bond sale; ESM Treaty challenge

Peter Brown, Irish Institute of Financial Trading The Irish Institute of Financial Trading
Seamus Coffey, UCC Economics Lecturer Seamus Coffey: This Treaty won't stop governments spending, despite what the No alarmists say - Comment, Opinion - Independent.ie
Karen Devine, DCU Lecturer In International Affairs Staff Details - Dr. Karen Devine
Mary Murphy, Claiming Our Future Who we are | Claiming Our Future

Just what was the significance of the NTMA bond switch today with investors committing a total of €5.32bn into longer dating bonds maturing in 2017 and 2020? The NTMA says that €4.19bn was new money. John Moran, Sec General of the Department of Finance described the figure of €4.19 billion as a very satisfactory result. But what do our panel say?

The Supreme Court, the Government and Independent TD Thomas Pringle have agreed on three issues to be referred to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) which will determine the lawfulness of the ESM Treaty. The ECJ is also expected to rule within days on Thomas Pringle's application for an injunction stopping the Government ratifying the Treaty now on grounds including his claim the Treaty is unlawful.

Yet another excellent show lined up tonight, Spidermom, with an excellent panel. You won’t want to miss a minute of it …

Independent TD Donegal South-West, Thomas Pringle, who challenged the European Fiscal Compact Referendum

Ooh...Devine and Coffey...almost makes me sorry I don't have a TV. Coffey is a real figures man, Devine is liable to quote completely made up ones.

I heard Peter Brown on the PK radio show the other morning and I though he was good...

Where is Constantin, now that we need someone to tell us that we are deluding ourselves about re-entering the bond markets and that we owe a trillion trillion Euros, so we're fekked and so is the Euro and we need to..um..basically move a lot of money to a more...um...stable environment in say, Switzerland....

    Why are we borrowing?

Because the Government spends 50% more than it takes in from taxes.

    Is this sustainable?

    Not on your nelly.
