A very serious and genuine issue being discussed on VB tonight. Unfortunately though, this thread won't see much activity as it seems the usual P.ie suspects only lap up VB shows in which Vinny uses the show as a vehicle to continue his personal grudge against Enda Kenny as opposed to shows that actually do really matter and which deal with substantive issues.
Don't get me wrong - I do feel sorry for that poor couple.

I am unclear as to what precisely they wanted the state to do.
Did they feel that they should be able to make a phone-call and somebody would raise their child for them?
Why was he seeing a psychiatrist? Was he mentally ill?
I think we are only getting a small part of this story.
That's, probably, the point.
The problem is that you will never hear the psychologists/social workers/psychiatrists side of the story. The system has good people in it but the system is very defensive.

they dont put people in mental institutions anymore so instead they employ an army of well paid social workers to design mickey mouse pointless solutions to deal with deeply disturbed people , its a great way of increasing the numbers employed by the state but does nothing for anyone else
social workers dont actually do anything , sitting opposite a distraught mother of a teenage drug addict with a meryl streep face while uttering empty platitudes is not a job , they are nothing but a wooly liberal creation , if everyone of them were fired tommorrow , it would not make a blind bit of difference , in fact it would do good as millions would be saved
