Obama to sent extra 17,000 troops to Afghanistan - North America - Independent.ie

US President Barack Obama has announced plans to send an extra 17,000 American soldiers to Afghanistan.
The extra troops will join around 33,000 US soldiers who are already operating in the country.

Obama continues to show his hand as a hawk dressed up as a dove.

Plus ça change?

Obama made no secret of his desire to both withdraw from Iraq and bolster the deocratic government of Afghanistan when he was running for election. An extra 17,000 troops should go along way to containing the Taliaban insurgency.

This is a ridiculous post.
Did you read his policies before the election?

he said he was doing this in his election campaign, the consequences of losing in afghanistan are grave. and Obama has changed US policy in relation to afghanisatn anyway, he is trying to incvolve iran and pakistan in the solution, by inviting them to take a role (non military), thats bi partisanship which the Bush administration did not do.

He is correct in this decision. America was attacked on 911 while the regime in Kabul admitted protecting Osama Bin Laden. They were given a month to hand him over, and refused, citing supposed obligations in Islam to show hospitality to "guests". The Taliban and Al Qaida asked for this. Much of the country is not under the control of the democratically-elected govt of President Hamid Karzai. Were the US to leave, the country would rapidly revert to control by the tyrannical Taliban regime and become an Osamastan. Unlike in Iraq, America's war in Afghanistan has right behind it. They are fighting to protect the West and the world from Islamofascist Al Qaida terrorism. Remember that this terror organisation massacred 3,000 men, women and children on 911. Irish people died in that terror attack, including a mother and her child on one of the planes. This is self-defence pure and simple.

Default Obama orders 17,000 troops to Afganistan

In his most significant military decision to date, President Obama has ordered an additional 17,000 US troops to Afghanistan. The move fulfills a campaign pledge to increase the size of the US occupation. The new deployments will take effect in May, increasing the US occupation force to 55,000—a 50 percent rise. Another 32,000 non-US NATO troops are also in Afghanistan. The news came as the UN said Afghan civilian casualties jumped by nearly 40 percent last year.

Democracy Now! | Headlines for February 18, 2009

Former United Nations human-rights investigator in Afghanistan and professor of law Cherif Bassiouni:

"There is no military solution in Afghanistan. There is an economic-development solution, but I don't see that coming. Right now, the population has nothing to gain by supporting the United States and NATO. It has everything to gain by being supportive of the Taliban."

Jimmy Carter has said on Obama's plan "I would disagree with Obama as far as a surge that would lead to a more intense bombing of Afghan villages and centers and a heavy dependence on military. I would like to see us reach out more, to be accommodating, and negotiate with all of the factions in Afghanistan."

What do you think the real solutions are for Afganistan? The last person to triumph in Afganistan I believe was Gengis Khan. Are Obama's actions to further destabalise the situation?

I never understood why they couldn't just bomb the camps from the air and use special forces teams to extract terrorist targets.

Why the nation building? Its utterly futile to nation build there from what I can see.

im surprised other nato countries still havn't increased their troops numbers, this is the supposed 9/11 war,

the polish said last week there are not sending an extra 1,600 troops, that the promised last year because of the economy.

the uk sending are another lot of troops, but it just goes to show how small, eu countries armies are
