I thought the governing communists won 50% of the vote in parlimentary elections on sunday which observers said was fair.
It is unlikelyto have that much popular support.

Just because they oppose a left-wing government doesn't make them automatically right-wing and all the negative assumptions and connotations that goes along with that.

Maybe they're liberals who view themselves as having evolved beyond simplistic left vs. right politics.

The SPS (Socialist Party of Serbia) was/is indeed left wing as it had the JUL (Yugoslav United Left), the Yugoslav Army Generals party LC-MY (League of Communists - Movement for Yugoslavia) and the trade unions under its wing.

Slobbo was a political prostitute. He was neither a nationalist nor communist. His only interest was consolidating his hold on power and he got into bed with anyone whenever it suited him. They ranged from Tito's generals, Kosovo Serbs, Croatian Serbs to the detestable Arkan and the SRS of Vojislav Seselj.

I dont know what is happening in Moldova but I reckon the Transdniestr dispute has some sway in it. Another attempt at a colour coded revolution?

If Moldova does attempt to re-incorporate Transdniestr, Russia will respond accordingly.

The tiny republic of Moldova erupted in violence today as anti-communist demonstrators stormed the parliament in protest at what they said were rigged elections.

Angry crowds smashed windows and threw furniture and computers from the building after overwhelming riot police in the capital Chisinau. Up to 20,000 people were said to be on the streets, many chanting "Freedom, freedom" and "Down with the communists".

Moldova's three main opposition parties demanded fresh elections to defuse tensions as protesters burnt communist flags and chanted "We want to join Europe" and "We are Romanians". Many were waving Romanian and European Union flags.
