Default Libertas Launch in France; Gathering together the conservative & nationalist fringe

From today's Irish Times

Quote:
JOY IS not an emotion one usually associates with Viscount Philippe de Villiers, the right-wing French politician who has built his career on fear-mongering over the influx of Muslim immigrants and opposition to what he calls the “oligarchs and commissars” of Brussels.

But “joy” was the word Mr de Villiers used to describe the launching of a joint European parliamentary election campaign uniting his Movement for France (MPF) and Frédéric Nihous’s Hunting, Fishing, Nature and Tradition (CPNT) party under the Libertas.eu banner yesterday.

Libertas founder Declan Ganley, whom Mr de Villiers called “our hero”, proudly watched over the ceremony.

...

Mr de Villiers mingled grievances against Europe and President Nicolas Sarkozy. Europe “must draw its borders, once and for all, without Turkey”, he said. He complained that Mr Sarkozy has allowed negotiations on Turkish accession to proceed on 10 of 35 chapters. And Mr Sarkozy did away with a constitutional provision requiring a French referendum on Turkish accession.

Then it was time for a tirade against “the crazy madmen who continue stealing people’s identity and traditions”. Europe was preparing regulations that would make rosé wine by mixing red and white, Mr de Villiers claimed. And Europe wanted to impose health warnings on camembert cheese!

Standing beside Mr Ganley, champion of free markets, Mr de Villiers the protectionist pleaded for “European preference, so that Europe can fight outsourcing and the transfer of our means of production to China”.

Still standing beside Mr Ganley, the defence contractor who has just named four former senior defence officials from the US and Britain to the board of his company, Mr de Villiers condemned Mr Sarkozy’s announcement yesterday that he is bringing France back into the integrated military command of Nato. “The return to Nato is the end of the independence of France. It is the end of the very idea of European defence.”

At this point they came in sight of thirty or forty windmills that are on that plain.
"Fortune," said Don Quixote to his squire, as soon as he had seen them, "is arranging matters for us better than we could have hoped. Look there, friend Sancho Panza, where thirty or more monstrous giants rise up, all of whom I mean to engage in battle and slay, and with whose spoils we shall begin to make our fortunes. For this is righteous warfare, and it is God's good service to sweep so evil a breed from off the face of the earth."

"What giants?" said Sancho Panza.

"Those you see there," answered his master, "with the long arms, and some have them nearly two leagues long."

"Look, your worship,'' said Sancho. "What we see there are not giants but windmills, and what seem to be their arms are the vanes that turned by the wind make the millstone go."

"It is easy to see," replied Don Quixote, "that you are not used to this business of adventures. Those are giants, and if you are afraid, away with you out of here and betake yourself to prayer, while I engage them in fierce and unequal combat."

So saying, he gave the spur to his steed Rocinante, heedless of the cries his squire Sancho sent after him, warning him that most certainly they were windmills and not giants he was going to attack. He, however, was so positive they were giants that he neither heard the cries of Sancho, nor perceived, near as he was, what they were.

"Fly not, cowards and vile beings," he shouted, "for a single knight attacks you."

A slight breeze at this moment sprang up, and the great vanes began to move.

"Though ye flourish more arms than the giant Briareus, ye have to reckon with me!" exclaimed Don Quixote, when he saw this.

So saying, he commended himself with all his heart to his lady Dulcinea, imploring her to support him in such a peril. With lance braced and covered by his shield, he charged at Rocinante's fullest gallop and attacked the first mill that stood in front of him.

The piece drips with bias. Note the use of the word "fring", the effort to paint Libertas as xenophobes and the effort to paint them as cranks by contrasting Ganley's free trade instincts with the protectionism of de Villiers. When Sarkozy talks about free trade and then indulges in blatant protectionism with car manufacturers this is ok.

Another load of nonsense from the Irish Times. Them not being able to land a single solid blow in Ganley or Libertas thet've got to continue with their weak campaign of catty swipes. It's a bit of a sad turn of events for the "paper of record" but at this stage not at all suprising.

No comment then on the "policies" put forward by de Villers and the fact that they appear to contradict the pro-American military, pro-Neo-liberal ideas of the Great Leader.

No comment from you either on the UK launch yesterday that saw Ganners put a former British Army spin/lie merchant in charge of his UK subsidiary ... err, party!

How much did it cost Declan to bribe these two parties into joining the Libertas fold?

If you knew what you were talking about, rather than your usual frantic childish ranting, you'd know that what he said, with no disagreement from either ** or ** was, . “On the matter of Nato, this is a decision that must be made at member-state level”. That's not a contradiction, that's respect for a nations sovereignty.

It's also strange that Lara Marlowe asked about the CAP and wrote about something entirely different...

Will you can put whatever obviously biased spin on it that you want but Robin Matthew's record speaks for itself.
