| That would account for the look of betrayal on your dog's face, glaring out the window.

| I'm feeding about 120 goldfinches along with a couple of pairs of blackbirds, starlings, great tits and a couple of robins. Noticed a couple of thrushes here too since the cold snap started. Hadn't had them for quite a while. Always had a handful of goldfinches down through the years. In 2008 I started to put out niger seed and the goldfinch numbers increased dramatically.

| If you have an airgun or rifle and see any magpies make sure to kill them. They predate on small birds. I know someone who traps and kill magpies in his neighbourhood. It has led to a bloom in the numbers of small birds around his garden during the summer. This lad here seems to sell traps for them For Sale: Magpie, Crow, Mink & Fox Traps. - DoneDeal.ie These dangerous immigrant birds with their ideology of hate must be stopped

| Great Thread MsAnne, consider yourself pos repped. I feed all year round with peanuts and seeds but at this time of year I augment it with suet, fruit and grated cheese as well as fortifying my usual seed with extra sunflower seed. My flock at the moment is mainly sparrows, chaffinches, starlings and my resident pair of blackbirds. Every day brings a visit from a pair of collared doves. During the summer I had lots of greenfinches and blue tits as well as a few great tits and pied wagtails. A siskin visited once but mustn't have liked the fare on offer as it didn't return. For some reason I almost never have robins. For the past 3 years, wood pigeons have tried unsuccessfully to nest in my garden, losing out once to a cat and twice to the wind. Last year, for the first time I can recall, 2 pairs of blackbirds raised at least 3 chicks. They had a nest at either end of the garden and there were many furious boundary disputes near my bedroom window. To keep the blackbirds around I put out apples under some shrubs. Pegging them to the ground with a U shaped staple fashioned from a coat hanger, prevents jackdaws and rooks from carrying them off. |
