I have to think about this. I think Alex White is the favourite but it must be remembered that he got lots of positive press coverage in the run up to 2007 (easy spots on The Sunday Supplement etc) and still did very poorly, getting 5.8% (not that Jim did much better, he didn't). However, Alex White had quite a high profile, much higher than Culhane (his running mate).
In the by-election he was mister sourpuss because Glee stormed in and got 20% of the vote.
Assuming that Jim runs he needs FG to make him the Dublin spokesperson effectively. He needs to be on every local radio show talking about all things Dublin. Highlighting the silly mayor idea (silly because the mayor will have no powers).
Maybe it will work if they start telling some hard truths about what we need to do in the economy and bash the economic populism (both bashing labour and distancing himself from the Lee debacle).
FF won't be forgiven though so I expect them to come a distant third.

FG are going to have to put a lot into backing Jim to win the seat again.

If you look at the figures Fine Gael should win. However I think there is a good chance that after all this Fine Gael members and voters will be just so disillusioned, that they won't put up much of a fight and so White will win. This has put a sour taste in a lot of mouths and that will be especially true in Dublin South.

A lot of FG members in Dublin South are absolutely disillusioned but with George Lee and his crap , particularly when you remember at his selection convention he clearly stated no promises were made to him or expected. On the other hand the manner in which O'Leary handled the whole issue of having Lee parachuted onto what should have been his patch, has earned him a hell of a lot of respect within the constituency and as such I cant see the members of FG DS allowing an ego maniac like Lee destroy the real possibility of O'Leary taking that seat.

If the DS and Donegal South West elections are held on the same day, (very likely), maybe Labour and FG could come to an arrangement whereby FG would concentrate resources on DSW and Labour on DS.

Two very tough elections, but one seat each would be seen as a good result by both.

While White is the front runner, I'd have no problem taking him on. He's nothing special, as seen from the last campaign, when he was initially swatted away, and then became an irrelevancy.

With the help of a god that I don't believe exists, FF will run Shay Brennan again.
If there's one silver lining from all this, its that we will see the talent that is Shay representing FF on a national stage again.

O'Leary will do a good job. The main problem will be vote disillusion with FG following Lee.

How to tackle that will be key.

A militia shoudl be sent in, and offer anyone who doesn't vote for FG 'long sleeves or short sleeves'.
