Default Google and the NSA, shouldn't data protection/privacy be a Govt competence ?

The only link l have to this post-alleged China hacking story is a bloggie, though it does cite a Washington Post article. Google have been in talks with the NSA and have been quiet about it. Tut tut, l am amazed that a search engine has penetrated so deeply into controversies re . what should be in essence 'consumer issues' and not *geo-political* areas of internet ethics. I'd have thought that data privacies, individual rights to privacy and ethical net management the job of government and not a corporate area . Google has ongoing problems in managing the data privacy problems; and consumer rights issues inherent in the GBS (for example) . Check out this interview with google head honcho marissa mayer, where her answer to questions about googles approach to privacy and the incredible power it has is, and this is almost a quote, 'we ask people to trust us'.
Revision3 > The GigaOm Show > Episode 12: Google's Marissa Mayer

Her constant nervous looking off to the side as if to double-check what she's saying with a team of lawyers or advisors also doesn't fill me with a great deal of confidence.

shouldn't then elected officials i). keep abreast of rapid globalised development and reflect privacy concerns in policy ii) seek to protect consumer and individual rights, as opposed to turning a blind eye to corporate penetration into areas where they have no competences ? (by virtue of being non-elected/representative)

l suppouse the utterly drab self-involved eejits who inhabit Leinster House all welcome continued and aggressive globalisation, once they do not have to think and can continue to amuse themselves with their parochial concerns (local vote getting, drains, cinemas and incinerators) .
