Default Is dyslexia real

I have noticed that in the past decade or so there has been an explosion of those diagnosed with dyslexia.

In Britain it is claimed that about 10% of the population suffer from dyslexia to some degree. 6 million people?

In the US the claim is between 15 - 20 % . About 50 million people as an average.

Is it possible that dyslexia has become a very convenient excuse for many underachieving students?

No,
my mun is Dyslexic, of course she didn't realise it until it became more known, its provided a lot of relief to her to know that she is not "stupid" as that is what she used to think

One of my nephews is dyslexic. He is the older of two boys. He is in his last year in college, whereas his younger brother is going on to do a Masters Degree. Can you imagine how hard it has been for the poor lad? It was only when he applied for college that they discovered he had dyslexia!

The comments of the OP are very cruel.

They are phrased as questions; not comments or statements of fact or beliefs.

All I can say to you is that my son is dyslexic and now that it has been diagnosed and action has been taken, he is achieving very well. He managed to soldier on in primary school and it was not till 2nd level that it became more easily identifiable. Prior to this he memorized stories etc, and took some time to spot that he was not reading back to you but had memorized what he heard in school.
To cut a long story short..... we spotted in time and got the appropriate help. now post diagnosis he excelling again, less frustrated, confidence back and achieving good results
Not sure where you are going with your post... buts that's my twopence worth as a parent.
