Statement from Joe Higgins
As venture capitalists seal their plan to smash 1,150 jobs at SR Technics by selling off the Landing Gear and Auxiliary Power Unit, the Irish Government and trade union leadership are in a state of pathetic paralysis.


They simply stand by and allow the dictatorship of the market to lay waste to an invaluable industry and source of jobs. SR Technics workers should immediately occupy the plant at Dublin Airport, prevent the sale of machinery and demand renationalisation of what was a publicly owned enterprise until Fianna Fail and the Progressive Democrats privatised it.

If it really was an invaluable industry and source of real jobs it wouldn't have gone bust.

And if there is real work that can be done there, and SR Technics was merely mismanaged and blew the opportunity, then somebody else will step in to provide that service.

No need for the State to get involved here.

Couldn't ageree more - and it will save on paying them the dole.

I sympathise with the workers in SR Technics, their employers and their unions let them down.

The best we can do is to try and connect the workers with relevant employers and offer retraining where necessary.

Nationalisation is not the answer. What went before obviously did not work and there is no point in reanimating a frankenstein.

Nobody disagrees there are many people in SR Technics with excellent skills to undertake the complex work involved in aircraft maintenance however there is one big problem..

It is not competitive anymore...period. The likes of Mr Ryan who are pioneers introducing cheap air travel can be thanked for all this, however I think you will find there are many service based industries around the world who will offer a more competitive service package and this will drive many airlines to use wherever best deal is.

This all goes back to the fact that Ireland Inc is just not competitive anymore....there will be many more closures like SR Technicks, and Unions or indeed Government cannot stop this slide.

Getting competitive starts from the top down also

Nationalise them to do what exactly? SR Technics are taking the bulk of the work with them to Zurich. Those contracts belong to the company - not the location.

Rubbish - the problem started about the time that Team Aer Lingus and SRS in Shannon (both owned by Aer Lingus) were forced by the government to bid against one another for contracts. There was more than one occasion when both companies were the only bidders for a contract and ended up driving down the value of the contract in order to ensure 'competition'. The government stoked the problem to facilitate hiving off both companies to privatisation. Coupled with the privatisation of Aer Lingus the government has destroyed three highly productive (and mostly profitable) state owned companies. The re-nationalisation of SR Technics would preserve a very valuable skills base - ensure the existance of the necessary support services for the aviation industry - and secure employment (and save dole repayments) in an island nation where the aviation sector is a vital component of the economy.

On second thoughts - leave it to the market - afterall the market has b*ggered up the rest of the economy - why shouldn't it do it to the aviation maintenacne sector as well (being sarcastic here if it wasn't obvious).

by your crazed freemarket ideology, if the banks really were an invaluable industry and source of real jobs they wouldn't have gone bust - should we have just let them collapse and waited for somebody else to step in to provide that service too?

Clearly the government is responsible for many many mess-ups over the years...look where we are now for gods sake.

If a private company provides a competitive service it will hopefully survive...its survival will depend of the most strict management and a very well controlled overhead. I am not preeching...its just the way it is now in order to survive. Irish companies may have had some cosy little deals in the past (note the builders and their mates....and indeed the banks) none were competitive, they controlled the market and the poor taxpayers got stuffed...and big time. Our children will pay for many many years.

Not getting off the subject...to survive a company MUST be competitive...and the owners of SR Technicks decided to do their business elsewhere....as the Dells..and many more have clearly done. Costs of doing business in Ireland is way too much....highest prices in every sector...and I mean every sector, even our so called minimum wage is too high

Yes the market will sort itself out...and if we dont manage it correctly it will suck itself inside out...look at the Banks.....now more or less Bankrupt
