Yes, the slavers of the Roman empire said the same thing - its slavery, its not fair, but hey, we are making a fortune, so it cant be all bad.

That would indeed be a positive step, but dont forget its Fianna Fail we're dealing with. You can be sure that the state will be bankrupt ten times over before they actually take anything from their dig out chums.

Farmers dont want land to be dear as it only suits a minority of farmers near towns who have lost love for their trade. I would be as happy if land was €1000 an acre. That way serious farmers could afford to expand and become more profitable. The price of land was artificially increased by the developer and speculators not the farmer. Also farmers who got land through the land commision had to pay for it through special rates and taxes. How do you propose this nationalised land be worked. This policy worked well in Russia didnt it. How is it going there now. |

Eventually it did work in Russia, and even today most farms are state farms. But it is nonsense to compare the Russia of the 1920s with Ireland today. In Russia you had tens of millions of people who totally depended on the land and only a tiny urban population in comparison. In the 26 today, there are only 40,000 full time farmers and the Irish economy is certainly not dependant on agriculture in any way that is comparible to Russia of the 1920s. I propose that state farms be put in place to work the land. Farmers would be offered jobs in the state farm that includes the land they used to own, so that they do not have to be parted from the land they love. Some may not accept out of spite, but you might be surprised how many would accept. That was the experiance in Spain during the civil war - and indeed in Russia (though there was quite a lot of sabotage there from former owners.)

Farming is only dependable in so much as farmers, on average, depend on the taxpayer for two thirds of their farm income. Any industry in the world would be dependable if you could say that about it. Indeed, its time to nationalize the banks - looks like its happening anyway. If you nationalize the land and the banks, you have automatically nationalized the construction industry.

Oh well at least you have more humanity than the Russians. They went down the road of slaughtering the peasant farmers. |
