The tax is applied to everyone and the country is strapped, in case you hadn't noticed.Let the airlines cut some of the bullsh1t taxes they've dreamed up instead.
End of story, move on.
Therein lies the problem. Applying a tax does not automatically mean you receive the tax. The increase in price can lead to fewer flights being taken. This leads to fewer tourists. fewer tourists means less VAT on their hotel stays. Means less money spent on booze in pubs. Means fewer kids from England spending money to go surfing in Doolin. Fewer Germans coming for a cheap weekend in Dublin.

The tax is likely to lead to a lower tax take.

You seem slightly agitated. Have a read over your own posts. I think you're lovely though.
Wouldn't you be agitated if your employer was making no money this year, spending 120 million of their cash pot paying people off, cancelling long term plans and the employees only starting to realise how bad the company is.

There's very little difference between those two airlines, so its not a useful comparison.

Personnally, I'd happily pay more to fly a proper airline such as BMI, Air France or Swiss. Your paying for less hassel and less annoying hidden charges - of which paying a fiver to check in (soon to be €20/person*flight, i'm sure) and €6/person*flight for the 'wheelchair levy' (must be gold plated wheelchairs) are the most annoying.

30 seconds on the EI and FR websites produced the following quotes for retuirn trips to Nice airport on the same days;

Note the Ryanair quote doesn't include handling fees whereas the Aer Lingus quote does. Add another 10 euro.
Also, Aer Lingus allows cabin hand baggage, Ryanair will charge 35 euro EXTRA penalty for it.
Aer Lingus allows 5kgs more Hold Baggage than Ryanair, which charges an extra 12 euro per kilo - making an automatic extra charge of 60 euro to match Aer Lingus allowance.

The Ryanair flight costs 107 euro more than Aer Lingus.

So in 30 seconds I proved you are a shmuck, and a Ryanair propagandist.
QED.
Going to Spain soon, however got an email on Monday from Aer Lingus saying my return flight had been cancelled and I was to be moved onto an earlier flight.

However, my flight was scheduled for 8 o clock in the evening and the rescheduled 1 was for 10 in the morning!!!
Very nice of AL to think I would like to cut my trip short by a whole day so I checked out what else they had. Zilch else and that morning flight had now gone up to €250 from the original €50 price.
Had a check on Ryanair and paid €24 euro (including all taxes/charges etc) for an evening flight close to my original booking. With the €50 AL refund I am making money on this change.

Coloda, think you are using a very selective approach. Ryanair are usually cheaper than AL when you are booking a month or more in advance (most tourists) but they do get much dearer closer to the date. Most sensible people check both and get the cheapest fare.

This is another bad experience I have with AL so I really don’t think I will be chancing them again unless I have no other choice.

Ryanair cancel and reschedule all the time. Get over it.

Good, you shopped around and saved money. I'm all in favour of that.

So, you give us a specific example and then tell ME I'm being selective?
Anything wrong with this picture? Duh!?

Will I point you to the numerous articles and websites where people are saying the same things about Ryanair - only LOUDER?
Why bother, find out for yourself.

The wheelchair levy is just one of Ryanairs numerous nasty little scams, but it may indeed be the worst, because it is at core a slur on disabled people. How low can you go?
Well, this is the company that brought us semi naked cabin crew and porno sluts. There's no limit they won't sink to.

Thats right - Ryanair keep the taxes instead of refunding them when passengers don't travel.
Ryanair habitually uses taxes as an income stream.

Utter bollox. Air Travel is already too cheap.
Let O'Leary scrap the wheelchair levy instead.

Any (real) politician reading this - I hope you understand that this is all just a Ryanair smokescreen and an attempt at distraction from their own serious financial problems. They've already made a loss this year, and are currently being lumbered with excess aircraft they ordered in the good times. Don't be fooled, don't be distracted. Don't be manipulated. Stick to your guns.
In fact, I'd say raise the tax just to make your point.

Well I may have missed something, but I haven't heard a peep out of Aer Lingus on the subject.
Go ahead and give us a link to an official Aer Lingus statement or media release calling for the abolition of the government tax.

I'm waiting with baited breath.

Actually increase in price vis a vis other countries will send some tourists elsewhere. But if I say black you'll say white.
