Evening Echo | SIPTU slams call for cuts in social welfare payments
Quote:
Ireland's largest trade union has slammed a call by a leading stockbroking firm for cuts in social welfare payments.

Goodbody Stockbrokers claimed yesterday that the move was warranted because of falling inflation.

SIPTU, however, says the solution to the current economic problems should not rest with taking money from the most vulnerable sectors of society.

It is calling on the Government to re-enter talks with trade unions on a social solidarity pact that will see the burden of economic recovery shared fairly according to people's ability to pay.

I have bad feelings who will gain most from this proposal...
It is a rather ridiculous standpoint for a number of reasons.. firstly, while the many "right wing fiscal conservatives" will call for social welfare cuts, along woth tax cuts, to stimulate the economy, the economic fact is, that people on social welfare spend practically all of their income, therefore increasing consumption demand, which helps stimulate the economy. Remove this income, and you will see a further fall in consumption, along with an undoubted rise in the black economy... and, much more likelyhood of serious civil unrest
