This is a discussion on Bailey brothers set to cash in on Metro North route within the Economy forums, part of the Topical Discussion category on Politics.ie. This is beginning to remind me a bit of The Sacred Highway being built in Co. Meath.......

Actually builders build where people can afford to buy.
That explains why we have so many estates without any public transport or services in or around the Bog of Allen for people working in Dublin.

except this is a necessary rail line being built to connect an international airport and a suburb that will grow bigger than most Irish cities, to the centre of Dublin, with no obvious impacts on world heritage. The M3 is a money spinning FF scandal

Face it folks, Baileys are not the only developers with huge landbanks in this city and many more will benefit hugely from infrastructural projects. When Dublin Port eventually moves to Breamore, there will be other developers coining it from that decision also.

Are you a builder yourself, or a FF party faithful? YOu certainly sound like it or else you have no understanding of this issue.

Builders build where politicians let them. Where people want to live and work is immaterial

The following are extracts from the conclusions of the second interim Flood/Mahon report at http://www.planningtribunal.ie/images/Report.pdf. They represent findings by a tribunal set up by the Oireachtas based on evidence presented to it.

"PAYMENT TO MR. BURKE AT BRIARGATE, SWORDS IN THE WEEK PRIOR TO
THE 15TH JUNE 1989

16-16 The meeting at Mr. Burke’s home at Briargate, Swords, Co. Dublin, in the week prior to the
15th June 1989, was specifically arranged by Mr. Michael Bailey and Mr. Burke so as to allow for the
payment of money to be made to Mr. Burke. The meeting was not arranged in order to receive a
political donation, but was arranged for the purpose of paying Mr. Burke money to ensure his support,
and his influence over others, so as to achieve the alteration of the planning status of the Murphy
company’s North Dublin lands, described as lots 1-6 in Mr. Bailey’s letter of the 8th June 1989
addressed to Mr. Gogarty…

16-17 The parties present at the meeting were Mr. Burke, Mr. Michael Bailey, Mr. Joseph Murphy
Jnr., and Mr. James Gogarty…

16-23 Mr. Burke assured those present at the time of the payment of monies to him that he
understood that the payment was being made in connection with the proposal to alter the planning
status of the Murphy lands and further assured those present that he would honour his commitment to
do so.

16-24 The payment received by Mr. Burke amounted to a corrupt payment and all present at the
meeting were aware that it was such."

I don't mean to be dismissive but I find it scary that what came out in the tribunal isn't common knowledge among the political literate classes.

No, I am neither, but I cannot understand the complaints that housing is being built near the Metro. Anywhere else this would be considered normal and rational, here it is viewed by some people as almost a crime against humanity.

Building high density appartments close to the Metro is a good thing.

The fact that it is the corrupt (as found by the Flood Tribunal) Baileys that will profit is anathema.
The co-incidence that this site is but a stones throw from Ray Burke's Briargate just adds to the disgust.

Alonso wrote that using the N1 route was obvious.
If you look at the development plans for Swords, you find that it is limited on the east by the M1 motorway.
Potentially more people could have benefited if they went up the center/west of Swords, away from the Bailey brother's site.

Yes perhaps that would have been justifiable also. However, Swords and Malahide will eventually merge (if it can be believed they haven't already), with the M1 as a nice big severance. Despite what i said earlier, an underground straight through the town centre would be ideal - too expensive though.

And bear in mind that every site within a 800m to 1 kilometre radius will contrbute to the costs of Metro, as they will benefit greatly from associated increased densities.

We cannot control who owns land. This route makes sense as it is the closest available option for the town centre, which is most important. If the Baileys make a fortune from building a high quality high density development, like Charlestown, i see no problem with it, despite their murky past.

What p1sses me off when a cabal of cowboys use unsustainable, wasteful nonsense like the M3 to vomit a housing estate or an office park on an interchange and consign a generation to commuter misery.
