this WONT go ahead without bloodshed on the streets. NO ONE in the public sector alone will stand for it, let alone the private one.

case of bad timing TBH but you cant implement "the toughest budget in decades" and give yourself a back hander.

thats the simple reality of the situation. now that its broke in the media there'll be a bit pissing and moaning but in the end this'll be scrapped.
Then it should be applied across the public sector - no increment payments for '09. That will make the pension levy seem like the plastic bag tax. Go for it.

All the fuss over 26 times 3k and it pales into nothingness compared to the million euro we spend every week renting portakabins for schoolchildren.

Perspective?

Good! Everybody should be doing everything they can to encougare strikes in the PS. I can think of no better solution to our current woes than to pay Unemployment benefit to all PS workers while they strike. We'd save a fortune on our current wage bill and a six month strike would balance the books nicely.

i was under the assumption that that was in the cards anyway.

we're only starting to get into this crisis managment stuff. anything that doesnt make a profit isnt going get ANY pay increase in the next few years, IF theyre lucky.

I dispair, I am totally at a loss with this.

It just reinforces my decision to leave this joke of a country.

what particularly galling about this is it came in under mcreevy.

during a BOOM .

and this is its FIRST payment as the law only came in in 2001.

so in real terms this DOESNT affect politicians like an increment cut would affect the civil service as its NEVER been paid and exists solely becauses a politician implemented it.

can you say "conflict of interest" ?

seeing as this is patently just a kick back "for the boys" as it only goes to those that got re-elected i dont see how it can be justified in a recession. after all its an HONOR to serve your nation, not a ticket to ride.

for those that forgot, politics is a vocation - not a career, and this increment is just an anachronism of a time of largess that we cant afford. politicians already get a pay increase inline with the higher end of the civil serice, they dont need this.
