Talks were being held to try to resolve the dispute involving workers at the Total Lindsey Refinery near S********************horpe.



Internet message boards have been rife with demands for a strike over plans to give 250 jobs to Italian and Eastern European workers as unemployment in the area rises. Today up to 1,700 people downed tools.

Do those workers not realise EU membership means free movement of workers? No one stops all the English heading off to work in Europe. Im sure theres good reasons that these foreign workers were required.

good question there may be a reason as to why those workers were brought in. It could be though that they are willing to work for lower wages than the local populace. They are apparenty hired for a particular scope of work. I would be interested in knowing what terms they are receiving.

If these folks are working for rock bottom rates well some call this the free movement of services and others call it exploitation of workers. Or maybe they really are a specialised work force but we would need to know more.

Laval, Ruffert, Viking, Gama, Irish ferries etc etc or just a normal everyday work contract.

Certainly an interesting story and one that would require a lot more facts to come to light before a proper assessment could be made.

It is good to see ordinary people defending themselves. It is only a matter of time before it spreads here as well.

I see its Jacobs. Big engineering firm. The Italian guys are probably the pipe/chemical/mechanical etc engineers and the easter europeans are probably the guys working for the grunt rates. Its probablt the poor eastern europeans who are getting screwed over in this instance.

This might be a PDs wet dream but its a bit sad to see lads being flown all over the place to work here and there so as to avoid paying workers normal rates.
