while i find this heartening i dont find it reliable! a poll taken this time next year and retrospectively compared will highlight how much of a knee jerk response this is.

no surprise to see the greens hold most of their core (single issue) vote.

but...while trying to maintain a note of realism, we do live in the present moment and at present FF are taking a deserved hammering and that is to be welcomed! however, often the electorate have short memories!

I'll move my dribblings over:

FG did relatively well after all, I expected Labour to pick up most of the disaffected, their performance this last week has been impressive. FF's attitude will be much as articulated above, an expected and temporary decline due to extraordinary circumstances. I think they're wrong, I suspect that this is going to become entrenched, much like happened to John Major in September 92 after the run on the pound. We'll know by Christmas.

Default Cowen reaping his and bumbling Bertie's harvest

Great poll for FG- and Labour somewhat. We need a FG/LB Govt. to bring competency back to national politics after bumbling Bertie (with Cowen as Minister for Finance) for ten years.

While the poll is VERY VERY encouraging for me as a FG supporter I know- and all FG members/supporters should know- that the party faces a huge battle to replace FF as the largest party in the Republic. Indeed FG would settle with just being in power but this poll along with another poll last year which had the party's very close alongside the great result FG had in the LE and EE last time shows that the appetite in there amongst the public for FF to be replaced as the largest party.

I won't go into that whole issue now as a new thread will need to be started on it but its striking that a lot of people think that FG and FF are merely two cheeks of the same arse. There IS a BIG cultural difference between FG and FF and FG will need to fight as hard as Barack Obama and his campaign workers in the US currently to get into Govt. next time and even (it's there for the taking) replacing FF as the largest party.

Its only the start, FF in my opinion need to call an election cut their losses and let FG deliver all the gloom and doom for the next 4 years and then hope to get back in when things start to improve although I don't know if FF see it that way, they may hope they ride out the bad times and be in power for the upturn if it ever comes

I'd put them closer together than that...

Of course, the main point of this poll was really to measure public reaction to the budget. The electorate do, as peadarmc says, have short memories and it is unlikely that this in any way indicates how the next GE will turn out.

But as a measure of public response to the budget, it's pretty damning.
