Since we're hardwired to survive and hardwired survival means protecting our own species, you make a choice to save the animal, thereby excercising that faculty which seperates us from animals; reason.

The hardwiring is a hangover from when we were few and the animals were more likely to eat us than we them. In modern times when we are in danger of turning the whole world into a shopping mall, at the expense of more vulnerable species, does the same morality apply?
